Growing up in the North, where the dominant choices were football and rugby, Brendan found himself naturally gravitating towards these games. However, it was a chance visit to his sister's hockey training that introduced him to a sport that would eventually become an integral part of his life.
With a family deeply rooted in hockey, it was only a matter of time before Brendan picked up the stick. Recollecting those early days, he shares a heartwarming anecdote of how an extra hockey stick in the family car became his first introduction to the game. This casual knockabout on the sidelines soon transformed into a more structured engagement when he joined the local club, Bowden, at the tender age of seven. The club not only honed his skills but also instilled in him a sense of community and belonging.
Safety, especially in a sport as dynamic as hockey, is paramount. Brendan's emphasis on the importance of the gumshield is both personal and profound. A traumatic accident at the age of 10, where he severely injured his front tooth, reinforced the significance of protective gear. This incident, coupled with his parents' insistence, made the gumshield an indispensable part of his game. His association with OPRO began in his early teens, and over the years, the brand has been a silent guardian, ensuring that Brendan never had to make an unscheduled dental visit.
Reflecting on his career, Brendan candidly shares his feelings about the Tokyo Olympics. While he cherishes the experience, the absence of fans and the subdued atmosphere made it feel different from the quintessential Olympic experience. Paris remains a beacon of hope, where he anticipates a more celebratory and jubilant atmosphere.
As for the future, Brendan remains grounded. Having recently completed his psychology degree with the Open University, he envisions a future in sports, though the exact path remains undefined.
