Watch Sadia Kabeya’s Rise From Grassroots to Red Roses!
For England Rugby’s Sadia Kabeya, sport has always been part of her DNA. She threw herself into athletics and gymnastics before discovering rugby at secondary school.
It was there that her teacher, and England international, Bryony Cleall introduced her to the game. From the very first session, Sadia was hooked. Rugby wasn’t just another sport; it was the one that brought out her competitive spirit, her physicality, and her love of being part of a team.
Her journey quickly accelerated. Sadia moved through the pathway system, Richmond Rugby, Centre of Excellence, England U18s and U20s - before making the leap into the Red Roses set-up. Now, still only in her early 20s, she’s preparing for the second Rugby World Cup of her career.
Reflecting on her early days at Richmond, she recalls the impact of playing alongside experienced teammates:
“My first rugby club was Richmond Rugby. I was freshly 18 playing with these superstars in my eyes. That club really shaped me in kind of enjoying rugby and knowing that was what I wanted to do.”
That determination has powered her into the top tier of the women’s game. But through every stage, one piece of equipment has been a constant companion:
“I’ve used OPRO all throughout my career, through under 18’s, under 20s, and now in my senior women’s career as well. OPRO have been part of my journey, and I always have my OPRO there, just in case.”
Sadia is also proud to represent something bigger than herself. As a Black woman in rugby, she recognises the importance of visibility and the impact it can have on others: inspiring young players who see themselves in her story. For Sadia, rugby is not just about the matches and medals - it’s about empowerment, representation, and opening doors for those who will follow.
From grassroots pitches to the world stage, Sadia’s story is a testament to the power of opportunity, hard work, and the people who help shape a player’s path. With her second Rugby World Cup on the horizon, she continues to inspire the next generation, showing that with dedication and the right support, dreams can become reality.
