Who Is Israel Adesanya? The Two-Time UFC Middleweight Champion Explained

Who Is Israel Adesanya? The Two-Time UFC Middleweight Champion Explained
There are fighters who win titles. And then there are fighters who change the way people think about a sport. Israel Adesanya is the second kind.
Born in Nigeria, raised in New Zealand, and trained in kickboxing across China, Israel Adesanya’s story traces a path few others have taken.

What Is Israel Adesanya's Nationality and Ethnicity?

Israel Adesanya has dual nationality as both Nigerian and New Zealander. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to New Zealand when he was ten, later becoming a citizen of both countries.
He is of Yoruba ethnicity, one of West Africa's largest groups, with roots in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. He grew up speaking Yoruba, English, and Nigerian Pidgin, and remains fluent in all three. He often speaks with pride about his Nigerian heritage, describing it as central to his identity as a person and a fighter.
He has also represented a third country during his career, fighting under the Chinese flag during his kickboxing days in China, where he was known as "The Black Dragon." Few fighters in combat sports history can say they've been claimed by three different nations.

Who Are Israel Adesanya's Parents and Family?

Israel Adesanya is the eldest of five siblings. His father, Oluwafemi, was an accountant, and his mother, Taiwo, a nurse. The family was relatively well-off, and Adesanya recalls his Lagos childhood as fun, roaming freely through the city.
His parents decided to leave Nigeria because they wanted their children to have a better education. The family spent about 10 months in Ghana, considering their options before choosing New Zealand. They thought about moving to the US, but after the September 11 attacks, it seemed too unstable. So, they chose New Zealand.
Adesanya often acknowledges his parents’ sacrifices in moving the family so their children could have more opportunities. Their commitment is displayed in the way he approaches both fighting and life.

Where Is Israel Adesanya From?

When Adesanya arrived in Rotorua, New Zealand, at the age of ten, he found the experience a culture shock. Black, Nigerian, and new, he entered a school where most classmates shared none of those traits. Bullying followed. Fitting in proved difficult. He even tried to change his speech to sound more like the others.
He has a tattoo that reads "Broken Native," which is his way of describing what it felt like to leave his homeland and move to a place that was unwelcoming.
What he eventually found in New Zealand was fighting. And fighting gave him everything.
Standing 6'4" and competing in the UFC middleweight division, Adesanya is not even the biggest man in his weight class. But from the moment he arrived in the sport, he moved and thought differently from everyone around him. That started in Rotorua and Auckland, and it started because of who he was and where he came from.

How Did Israel Adesanya Get Into Fighting?

Israel Adesanya was not always focused on combat sports. As a teenager in New Zealand, he was better known for dancing. He competed in dance competitions across the country, and this gave him a sense of movement and rhythm that would later shape his fighting style.
The pivotal point came at eighteen, when he watched Ong-Bak, the Thai martial arts film that introduced many people in the West to Muay Thai. It lit something in him. He started training in kickboxing. Two years later, he dropped out of his Bachelor of Computer Design degree to pursue it full-time.
What followed was a kickboxing career that led him across New Zealand and Australia, and eventually to China, where he built a lengthy winning streak fighting for Wu Lin Feng, one of China's biggest combat sports promotions. His record across kickboxing was extraordinary, and by the time he arrived at the UFC, he had already been world-class in one combat sport for years.
The UFC came calling in December 2017. He made his debut in February 2018 and has been one of the promotion's biggest stars ever since.

Israel Adesanya vs Alex Pereira: The Rivalry That Formed a Career

No story about Israel Adesanya is complete without Alex Pereira.
The two men first met in kickboxing, where Pereira defeated Adesanya twice, including a devastating knockout. When Pereira eventually joined the UFC and challenged Adesanya for the middleweight title at UFC 281, he did it again by stopping the champion in the fifth round to take his belt.
For most fighters, that would have been the end of the story.
The rematch at UFC 287 told a different story. Adesanya knocked Pereira out in the second round to reclaim his title, creating one of the most satisfying moments of his career in front of a roaring crowd in Miami. It was more than just a win; it showed that someone who had lost to the same opponent several times would not let that be the end of his story.
The rivalry remains one of the defining chapters in UFC middleweight history. Pereira has since moved up to light heavyweight and beyond, but the joint history between these two men is something fight fans will talk about for years.

What Is Israel Adesanya's UFC Record?

Since making his UFC debut in February 2018, Israel Adesanya has rapidly established himself as a major presence in the middleweight division. He captured the interim title, unified it by defeating the division's top contender, and defended it multiple times against elite opponents, strengthening his status as one of the best middleweights.
Adesanya's victories over well-known fighters like Anderson Silva, Robert Whittaker, Paulo Costa, and Alex Pereira show his elite status. He has won the UFC middleweight title twice, which is something very few fighters have done, and he has headlined some of the promotion's biggest events.
At the time of writing, Adesanya is working to rebuild his momentum following a run of difficult results. His record, including all his most recent results, is tracked on his UFC athlete profile.

What Is Israel Adesanya's Fighting Style?

Before he became a fighter, Adesanya was a dancer who competed across New Zealand as a teenager. That is not just a side note; it explains a lot. His timing, rhythm, and ability to make opponents miss by the smallest margins all come from someone who learned to move before he learned to fight.
His nickname, "The Last Stylebender," comes from Avatar: The Last Airbender. He chose this name on purpose, wanting to master all the elements to become the best. His mouthguard design also reflects this identity, showing his love of anime and manga. With Adesanya, nothing is left to chance.
At 6'4", he has the reach to keep opponents at a distance and pick them apart with strikes they find hard to time. His kickboxing background gives him a striking game that is above most MMA fighters. He is a counter-striker by instinct, comfortable letting opponents come forward and making them pay for every mistake. His footwork is exceptional and his timing is elite.
The danger with Adesanya is that there is no obvious way in. His striking is good enough to hurt you, his calmness under pressure has got him out of trouble on multiple occasions, and he has done this at the highest level for longer than most of his opponents. He has seen everything.
